Callen Lecture 2024

Irwin R. Callen M.D. Memorial Lectureship

 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
The Irwin R. Callen, M.D. Memorial Lectureship honors the memory of a dedicated physician, educator and humanist who enriched the hospital, the Miami Heart Institute. Through his tireless efforts in his pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Callen enhanced and invigorated educational programs through sponsorships of lectureships, expansion of the library and encouragement of clinicians to publish. As an editor of the Medical Clinics of North America, Dr. Callen included many contributions from his fellow physicians. The Memorial Lectureship is dedicated to Dr. Callen for his commitment to continuing education and his pursuit of excellence.

Conducted annually in late summer/ early fall in conjunction with the annual conference of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology in Orlando, the Callen Lecture brings world-renowned medical authorities to educate Florida cardiologists, surgeons and researchers in the area of cardiovascular medicine. Notable lecturers such as Dr. John W. Kirklin, known as the “father” of modern cardiac surgery, Dr. Valentin Fuster, former president of the American Heart Association, and Dr. Michael DeBakey who revolutionized the care of the cardiovascular patient provide groundbreaking lectures with CME credits to eager attendees.

Joshua Lampert, MD will deliver the 36th annual Irwin R. Callen, MD Memorial Lecture entitled
"Management of Atrial Fibrillation: Impacts of AI and Machine Learning"

Joshua Lampert, MD, FACC, FHFSA will deliver the 36th annual Irwin R. Callen, MD Memorial Lectureship, the "Legacy of Knowledge" on August 10, 2024 at 10:20 am (EST) as part of the Annual Meeting of the Florida Chapter, American College of Cardiology.  The title of his lecture is "Management of Atrial Fibrillation: Impacts of AI and Machine Learning".   Dr. Lampert will incorporate updates in the management of atrial fibrillation, provide a brief introduction to understanding AI and discuss the intersection of clinical management with these new tools.

Joshua M. Lampert, MD, FACC is a cardiac electrophysiologist, Assistant Professor of Medicine, and the Medical Director of Machine Learning at the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital.

After graduating medical school as a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, he completed his internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center. He then completed both his fellowship in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology at Mount Sinai Hospital. He holds board certifications in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, and cardiac electrophysiology.

Dr. Lampert was a recipient of the Mount Sinai Hospital Physician of the Year award in 2021 and has been recognized on multiple occasions for delivering exceptional patient care by the Patient Comments Committee. He specializes in treating patients with cardiac arrhythmias including catheter-based interventions such as ablation of atrial fibrillation, complex atrial flutters, supraventricular tachycardias, and ventricular arrhythmias. He treats heart rhythm disorders and also implants cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators including novel leadless devices.

Dr. Lampert's research focuses on the application of novel artificial intelligence methods to improve patient care, diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment, and procedural guidance. His work spans the use of algorithms applied to cardiac electrical waveforms, images, and large language models, such as his development of an algorithm to predict which patients with PVCs go on to develop weak hearts based on the electrocardiogram (ECG). His research also focuses on atrial fibrillation, stroke risk and bleeding, leadless pacing, and catheter-based technologies. He investigates novel approaches to safely operationalize various algorithms and machine learning based systems. He was a recipient of the 2023 Simon Dack Award from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology for outstanding scholarship and the 2021 BOLD 10 Under 10 award from Binghamton University where he completed his undergraduate degree.

We are honored to have Dr. Lampert present this prestigious lecture honoring the memory of Dr. Irwin R. Callen and continuing his legacy of knowledge.
